What Is GOTS Organic Cotton and Why It Matters
If you've ever bought a T-shirt labelled "organic cotton" and wondered what that actually means — you're right to wonder. The word organic gets used loosely in fashion. It can mean a lot of things, or almost nothing at all, depending on who's using it and whether anyone is checking.
GOTS is different. It's the certification that closes that gap.
What GOTS actually means
GOTS stands for Global Organic Textile Standard. It's the most rigorous certification in the textile industry, and one of the few that covers the entire production chain — from the field where the cotton is grown to the factory where the garment is sewn.
To carry the GOTS label, a product has to meet strict criteria at every stage. The cotton must be grown without synthetic pesticides or fertilisers. The dyeing and finishing processes must use only approved, non-toxic substances. The factories involved must meet environmental and social standards — no forced labour, fair wages, safe working conditions.
Every link in the chain is independently audited. Not self-reported. Audited.
That's what makes it different from a brand simply calling something "organic" on a label. GOTS means a third party has verified the claim.
Why it matters for the people who make the clothes
Conventional cotton farming is one of the most chemically intensive agricultural processes in the world. It uses a significant share of the world's pesticide supply despite covering a relatively small percentage of farmland. Those chemicals don't just stay in the field — they affect the soil, the water supply, and the people who work the land.
GOTS-certified cotton starts from a different premise. No synthetic pesticides. No GMO seeds. Soil health is considered part of the process, not an afterthought.
Further down the chain, GOTS covers the workers in the factories. Minimum wage requirements, limits on working hours, the right to organise. These aren't extras — they're conditions of certification. A brand can't carry the GOTS label if its supply chain fails these social standards, even if the cotton itself is organic.
Why it matters for the people who wear the clothes
Conventional textile processing uses hundreds of chemical compounds — many of which remain in the finished fabric. Residues from bleaching agents, synthetic dyes, and finishing treatments can irritate skin, cause allergic reactions, and accumulate in the body over time.
GOTS-certified garments are processed with a restricted list of approved substances only. The result is a fabric that's genuinely cleaner — better for sensitive skin, better for long-term wear, better for the person sleeping in it, training in it, or wearing it every day.
At 240gsm, the cotton in every Caparica piece is also significantly heavier than the average T-shirt fabric. It wears differently — softer over time, more structured from the start, built to last rather than to be replaced.
Why we chose it for Caparica
When we decided to make clothes, we had a simple rule: if we're going to ask someone to pay €44.90 for a T-shirt, it has to be worth it. Not just in how it looks or fits, but in what it's made of and how it was made.
GOTS wasn't a marketing choice. It was the floor. The minimum standard we were willing to work with.
The workshops we partner with in Portugal are small, specialist operations. They work with GOTS-certified materials because they take the same view we do — quality isn't just about the end product, it's about the entire process that creates it.
House music culture has always had a clear sense of what's authentic and what isn't. You can hear it in a track, feel it in a room, see it in how people carry themselves. We think clothing works the same way. The people who wear Caparica don't need to read the certification label. But it's there, and it means something.
What to look for
If you're shopping for sustainable clothing and want to know whether an "organic" claim is real, look for the GOTS certification mark. It should be visible on the label or product page. If a brand says "organic cotton" without any certification reference, that claim is unverified — and in fashion, unverified usually means unsubstantiated.
Every Caparica piece carries the GOTS certification. Not because it's a selling point — because it's the right way to make something worth keeping.
Caparica is a house music clothing brand born between Paris and Portugal. The First Feel collection is available now — oversized unisex tees, 240gsm GOTS-certified organic cotton, made in Portugal.
